Introducing THE TEXAS ECONOMY

These are tumultuous and sometimes scary times for many of us. The American economy remains sluggish, while the international order is as fragile as it has been in generations. European nations are struggling on the edge of bankruptcy, and many fear the steamrolling Chinese economy may overheat.

Amid global difficulties, our state has been more than fortunate. Late to enter the recession and early to recover, Texas has become the nation’s primary engine of growth, producing more than a quarter of all U.S. jobs since the official end of the recession and currently adding jobs twice as fast as the nation as a whole.

A young and vital work force, a burgeoning energy industry and America’s best business climate have given Texas a competitive edge.

But an economy doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Events in the state, the nation and around the world affect us every day. Understanding the complex interactions and events that make up the Texas economy may be a good way to help ensure that we keep our enviable position in the race to the top.

That’s why I’d like to welcome you to The Texas Economy— the Web’s first comprehensive guide to the economic forces shaping the nation’s fastest-growing large state.

At The Texas Economy, you’ll find stimulating infographics, timely articles, printed and video interviews with government and private-sector experts — and above all, hard data and reliable, well-written analysis on a wide variety of topics of concern to Texas policymakers, businesses and taxpayers. We’re working to bring you key insights into long-term trends that will affect all Texans.

From public education trends to federal environmental regulation, from state spending figures to key business indicators — if it concerns the Texas economy, you’ll find it here. We hope you make The Texas Economy a regular stop on the Web.
